Alexander H. Trechsel is Professor of Political Science and the first full-time holder of the Swiss Chair in Federalism and Democracy at the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence, Italy.
He completed his academic education at the Universities of Geneva, Michigan, Essex, Oslo and at the European University Institute. He received his Ph.D. in political science (with distinction) from the University of Geneva (Switzerland).
Before coming to the EUI in 2005 he was Vice-Director of the Research and Documentation Centre on Direct Democracy (c2d) at the Law Faculty of the University of Geneva (1999-2005).
Prof. Trechsel initiated and coordinates the new European Union Democracy Observatory (EUDO) at the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies of the EUI.
